A Digital Signature Certificate is an electronic form of a signature that helps authenticate the identity of an individual or organization in digital communications and online transactions. It ensures data security, integrity, and authenticity.

You need a DSC to securely sign digital documents, file returns (such as Income Tax, GST, or MCA filings), participate in e-tendering/e-procurement, and authenticate your identity in online platforms.

DSCs are issued by licensed Certifying Authorities (CAs) authorized by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), Government of India. Examples include eMudhra, Sify, Capricorn, and NIC.

The main types are:
  • Class 2 DSC – For filing Income Tax, GST, ROC, and other government forms.
  • Class 3 DSC – For e-tendering, e-procurement, and high-security online transactions.
  • Class DSC – For businesses involved in foreign trade (import/export).

A DSC is usually issued with a validity of 1, 2, or 3 years. After expiry, it must be renewed to continue usage.

Typically, the following documents are required:
  • Proof of Identity (PAN Card, Aadhaar, Passport, etc.)
  • Proof of Address (Voter ID, Aadhaar, Utility Bill, etc.)
  • Passport-size photograph
  • For organizations: Company PAN, registration documents, and authorization letter.

Yes, a DSC can be revoked by the issuing authority before its expiry if the subscriber violates terms of usage, the private key is compromised, or if the user requests revocation.
